The motivations of physical activity practitioners

The evolution of the vision of sport linked to the overall health of the individual and society has opened the physical-sports practice to a wider range of practitioners of various types and levels. More and more variants of physical activity can be found, as well as niches of practitioners that were never imagined existing in the past. In addition to this evolution, this change has also been associated with the current situation where a large part of sports practice has had to adapt to a virtual format. It is true that some of the trends do not last over time and are just a fad, but they have come to create behaviour in society.

Even so, it can be said that currently there is such a variety of sports practice and so many purposes of physical activity that it is difficult to find a suitable categorization that encompasses all profiles of practitioners. This fact, however, should not be seen as a problem, but rather as an opportunity where depending on the objective to be achieved, it is possible to work with some profiles or others. For example, if a municipality has a low rate of sports practice among adolescents, it will have to work according to the profiles of practitioners by age. On the other hand, another municipality with a demand for more activities in the indoor swimming pool will have to focus on the profiles of those practising in the aquatic environment.

Thus, classifications can be very broad and varied depending on the categories used, therefore, the idea is not to group many specific groups within the same characteristics. In this sense, it is proposed to identify the practitioners according to their motivations for practice, detecting what they may be and how sports practice is defined within each segment.

It should be noted that the perfect classification is difficult to find and that the key is to discover the maximum number of perspectives that help to have a global vision adapted to the social and sporting transformation of the future.
