Girona can count on the first covered velodrome in Catalonia if one of the most outstanding proposals of the project is carried out.
The Girona City Council promoted a Strategic Reflection of Local Sports and the drafting of the Sports Facilities and Equipment Map, in order to establish strategic orientations in sports and physical activity. Thus, one of the main objectives of the project was to reflect the role of sport in the future of the city and define the way to reach it.
There was a very participatory methodology from the beginning of the project, involving representatives of the different sports agents in the city to define the guiding principles that would guide the reflection process. Subsequently, during the analysis phase, a total of 17 in-depth interviews were conducted with representatives of the local sports system and workers of the Sports Service. In addition, visits were made to the main sports facilities to assess their conservation status and possibilities for expansion and/or improvement.
From the results of the analysis and diagnosis, 5 strategic lines of work were identified that led to different programs and at the same time in the concretion of different actions to be carried out. One of the lines puts the focus on having a quality equipment park, where cycling takes on special importance with the proposal to incorporate an outdoor cycling park and a covered velodrome.
The project has become a roadmap for the municipal corporation, a dynamic work tool that must be enriched with the contributions that can be made by the different actors involved in promoting sports in the city, and adapting to new needs derived from a sector in constant evolution.
